MCCAUSLAND - Imogene R., Prominent Buffalo artist was 101
6/29/2005

Imogene R. McCausland, an artist whose work appeared in the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., died suddenly on Sunday evening in her Buffalo home. She was 101.

Born Imogene Margaret Robertson in Buffalo, Mrs. McCausland was a lifelong city resident and 1920 graduate of South Park High School who received a scholarship to the Albright Art School. She also studied figure painting at the Art Institute of Buffalo.

Six of her moon rock series of paintings are owned by the National Air and Space Museum, where they were exhibited for more than 20 years.

Based on photomicrographs of moon rocks, the paintings required Mrs. McCausland to develop a unique medium of tissue over foil in order to capture the luster of the specimens with her ink.

When she was a member of the Associated Arts Organizations, she had the idea to use a portion of the Theodore Roosevelt National Historic Site for art exhibitions.

A member of the Buffalo Society of Artists for more than 50 years, and its treasurer for 30, Mrs. McCausland had been an active member of the Western New York branch of the National League of American Pen Women.

A life member of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, she was also a longtime member of the First Presbyterian Church of Buffalo.
Her husband, Walter, retired vice-president of Public Relations of the Niagara Frontier Transit Corp. (NFT), formerly the I.R.C. (International Railway Corporation), died in 1966.

She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Newbury of West Seneca; two sons, Alan R. and Bruce H., both of Buffalo; a sister, Doris Petrie of Twin Falls, Idaho; a brother, Ralph A. Robertson of Williamsville; 15 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will take place at First Presbyterian Church, One Symphony Circle, Buffalo, NY Sunday, July 31st at 2:00pm. Private burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Orchard Park.
